Parks Canada Agency Douglas Fir Slopes Prescribed Burn
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
This project will be assessed with a basic impact assessment. Jasper National Park Fire Operations is proposing to burn Douglas Fir Hillsides units surrounding the Jasper townsite. There are nine, low complexity units that range from 16 to 83 ha, for a total of 382 ha. Desired fire behaviour will be low intensity surface fire resulting in significant understory woody regeneration mortality, significant reduction of surface fuels and minimal canopy tree mortality. The primary objective of this prescribed fire is to support restoration and maintenance of Douglas-fir savannah ecosystems. Secondary objectives include education opportunities for the public regarding the role of fire in forest ecosystem and wildfire risk reduction. Prior to unit ignition, hand felling of understory fir and pine regeneration may be required in order to minimize the risk of crown fire in units with dense understory regeneration. Control lines will be burned prior to main unit ignition and in some cases may be reinforced with wetline.
