James Smith Cree Nation Solid Waste Transfer Station

James Smith Cree Nation is proposing the construction of a new solid waste transfer station immediately west of the Nation's sewage lagoon. The proposed site is currently utilized as agricultural lands. Construction will consist of establishing a 200 m x 75 m pad with two access points from the existing gravel road bounding the western extent of the site. The pad will contain diversion and storage bays for recyclable materials and hazardous waste (with secondary containment), as well as an elevated platform for transfer of household refuse into waste containers. Perimeter ditching will surround the entirety of the site and will tie-in to existing drainage courses.

Site preparation activities will consist of topsoil stripping the overall site extents. Approximately 2 hectares of topsoil stripping will be required, with ground disturbance activities consisting of excavation of perimeter ditching and building up the transfer pad area. All anticipated waste generation from construction activities will be responsibly handled and disposed of to designated off reserve facilities. Procedures will also be followed to limit the amounts of waste generated during construction, and mitigate any potential contamination pathways for petroleum products from on-site equipment.
