Replacement of the suspension cables on the Pierre-Laporte Bridge

In order to ensure user safety by preventing service disruptions related to the condition of the suspension cables on the Pierre-Laporte Bridge and to extend the structure's useful life, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (MTMD) plans to replace the suspension cables, which will involve removing all 160 suspension cables attached to the anchor blocks of the main cables and replacing them.

The following work will be carried out above the channel:

  • Installation of temporary work platforms at the bottom of each suspension cable;
  • Installation of temporary supports or upgrading of existing supports for each suspension cable;
  • Installation of temporary walkways along the suspension cables;
  • Removal of existing suspension cables;
  • Replacement of the anchor console at the base of the suspension cables;
  • Removal and replacement of certain collars (at selected locations);
  • Painting of collars left in place;
  • Installation of new hangers;
  • Removal of temporary hangers and work platforms at the bottom of the hangers;
  • Touch-up painting of areas left without protective coating following the work;
  • Replacement of handrails on the suspension cables;
  • Installation of air ducts on the suspension cables of axes 14, 14', 56, and 56';
  • Coating of the suspension cable;
  • Dismantling of walkways along the cable.

Related work is also planned, such as:

  • Installation of a dehumidification system for the suspension cables;
  • Internal inspection of the suspension cables;
  • Installation of a dehumidification system for the central chambers;
  • Removal of temporary diagonals in the truss beams.

The work is scheduled to be carried out between August 2026 and December 2029 for the replacement of the suspension cables. The installation of the dehumidification systems will be completed in the fall of 2030.
