Pilot project for a trail accessible to visitors with dogs on leash, Multi-Use Trail No. 3. La Mauricie National Park.

The objective of the proposed pilot project is to measure the real operational implications and impacts of the introduction of trails where dogs would be allowed on the quality of the visitor experience and on the ecological integrity of La Mauricie National Park, with a view to including in the service offer trails that are accessible to dogs on leash on a permanent basis. It will run for a period of 5 years, from June 21, 2021 to October 31, 2026. Multi-use trail #3 was selected for the pilot project because of its many advantages related to its nature, location, accessibility, infrastructure and visitor attractions. Specific measures and conditions will be put in place to validate the initial hypotheses of the pilot project and their final outcome, to monitor the project, to measure the effects and to mitigate the impacts on the environment and other visitors. Signage, awareness-raising, dog waste bag dispensers and waste collection devices will be installed in the area. Analysis of the results of the pilot project will determine the long-term viability of the project; however, Parks Canada reserves the right to discontinue the project at any time if it has significant negative impacts at any level.

May 12, 2021 – The public comment period on the project is closed. Parks Canada is considering comments received to help inform its determination on whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
