Replacement of a generator and installation of a new petroleum storage system at 1001 boul. Saint-Laurent

Health Canada (HC) is the custodian of the Health Canada Laboratory, 1001 St Laurent Boulevard West, Longueuil, PQ (Directory of Federal Real Property DFRP 06740). The building was built in 1972 for Health Canada. The building is fully utilized by programs supporting Health Canada's and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) inspection, analytical and administrative activities for the enforcement of Canada's Food and Drug Act. The existing emergency generator dates from 1989 and is thirty-three years old. The average lifespan of emergency generators is approximately 30 years old. A study of the system concluded that while the emergency generator is in good condition, "given the advanced age of the equipment, it is much more likely that breakage may occur. The existing system has fuel capacity to operate the building for up to 14 hours. The current installations do not meet building codes and in the event that renovations / improvements take place code compliance will be required. A new emergency generator will be installed to provide a minimum of 24 hours of autonomy. A petroleum product tank (type A diesel) with a capacity of 7,500 liters will be installed.

The objective of this project is the ensure a reliable source of electricity in the event of power interruptions, and an uninterrupted switchover to an emergency power, in order to contribute to life safety and to protect the intellectual and physical assets in the building
