Installation of Automated Gates in Gatineau Park

As part of the implementation of the Gatineau Park Sustainable Transportation Strategy, the National Capital Commission (NCC) launched a pilot program operating a shuttle service during the summer of 2022 on the Gatineau, Champlain and Lac-Fortune parkways to promote alternative means of transportation.

The continuation of this summer service requires the establishment of infrastructure to control vehicle traffic in Gatineau Park. The NCC plans to install automated gates at all Parkway entrances and exits, at six different sites, to control vehicle and shuttle traffic in the Park according to schedule.

The sites are: parking lots P3, P6 (Mackenzie King Estate), P5 (intersection of the Gatineau Parkway and Kingsmere Road), P8 (intersection of the Gatineau Parkway and Meech Lake Road) and P10 (Fortune Lake Parkway), as well as the exit to Saint Raymond Boulevard.

Construction will begin in the spring of 2023 and will be completed in the fall of 2023.

Objectives:

  • Provide a seamless shuttle service to Gatineau Park visitors in the Parkway Sector with infrastructure that will allow visitors using the shuttle to enjoy their Park experience.
  • Install automated gates at strategic locations in the Park to facilitate the ingress and egress of shuttle buses and emergency vehicles on the Parkway network, while allowing the network to remain closed to unauthorized vehicles and users.
  • Install signage and other traffic management measures to ensure the smooth operation of the shuttle service (e.g., dedicated stop spaces) and the safety of park users (e.g., signage indicating the presence of buses on the parkways when they are closed to motorized vehicles).

The construction phases include:

  • Installation of temporary signage during the construction period
  • Temporary closure of traffic lanes
  • Installation of automated barriers
    • Construction of concrete bases
    • Construction of electrical and communication networks
  • Restoration of the sites
  • Opening of lanes and activation of barriers
