Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Material Pit Expansion Project

In support of ongoing operations at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) site maintains a spoils and material processing pit that houses fill and material extracted from within the site. The pit is currently at capacity and therefore it is necessary to expand the area of this pit to ensure its safe operation and allow for effective sorting of materials for re-use on the CRL site. The proposed expansion takes advantage of a natural clearing and is approximately 2.3 hectares in area.  Project activities will include vegetation clearing and the installation of an 1170 m permanent fence around the perimeter of the pit.  A species at risk assessment was conducted and it was determined that the proposed site was unsuitable habitat for bat maternity roosts and other species at risk in the area.  All physical activities will be conducted in accordance with CNL's Environmental Policy and applicable legislation.
