28 Alexandre-Taché Boulevard: Building Improvements

28 Alexandre-Taché Boulevard: Building Improvements

In the first half of the 19th century, the property at 28 Alexandre-Taché Boulevard in Gatineau was part of the farm owned by Philemon Wright, the founder of the Hull agricultural colony. The house on the existing property was built circa 1877, by descendants of Philemon Wright, who played a key role in the economic development of the region. The Quebec government designated the buildings and property as a historic site in 1979. In 2006, the property was acquired by the National Capital Commission (NCC), and the house was designated as a "classified" building by the Federal Heritage Buildings Review Office (FHBRO) in 2009.

The goal of this project is to protect this classified heritage asset for the current tenant and future generations by performing envelope rehabilitations and by following heritage conservation best practices in planning these interventions.

The project scope:

  • Address the envelope issues of the heritage house, including minor targeted masonry repairs around the windows, and rehabilitation of the windows and exterior doors
  • Undertake minimal structural repairs in the basement
  • Improve rainwater management by adding a small gutter and downspout to the north bay window roof on the north facade
  • Rehabilitate the west porch and make this entrance at the north bay window universally accessible to accommodate future occupants' accessibility needs

No vegetation clearing is required to complete the scope of work. Due to the heritage classification of the house, the FHBRO and Quebec's Ministère de la Culture et des Communications will perform a review of the proposed works prior to finalization of the design.

Rehabilitation activities will take place from May to December 2022. Mitigation measures will be implemented to prevent potential impacts on nesting birds and bats.
