Jacques Cartier Bridge, Section 1, demolition of the original Maintenance Centre, redevelopment of the plateau, and construction of a duct bank (2025-2026)

Inaugurated in 1958, the original Maintenance Centre for the Jacques Cartier Bridge was originally used as a toll booth. In 1962, the tolls were abolished and the toll booths were taken down. The building is two stories high and has six exterior facades. The building consists of materials containing asbestos and lead. It is located at the south end of the bridge at the top of the embankment. In front of this building is a circular driveway that also serves as a waiting area for some users and public utilities. Parking spaces are located on both sides and at the rear of the building. The original Maintenance Centre is accessible from the Hwy. 134 ramps, Sainte-Hélène Street, and an access ramp from the bottom of the embankment. The building was used as administrative offices for employees of the Operations and Maintenance Department of the Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) until 2021. In December 2021, a new Maintenance Centre was built to better meet JCCBI's needs and its operations were transferred to this site.

The goal of this project is to demolish the original Maintenance Centre and decommission its utilities before redeveloping the site. The site will be redeveloped in keeping with specific operational, aesthetic, architectural and ecosystem criteria and the architecture and functionality of the new Maintenance Centre building.

The project will include but is not limited to:

  • Improving the configuration and aesthetics of the site at the top of the embankment.
  • Exploring the possibility of using the new Maintenance Centre building as a parking lot for JCCBI staff and visitors to the Maintenance Centre as well as installing electric vehicle charging stations in the parking areas and connecting them to the power supply.
  • Improving safety and traffic flow at the site.
  • Repairing the access ramp on the embankment.
  • Improving the configuration of the lane that merges back onto the Jacques Cartier Bridge (circular driveway).
  • Relocating or replacing the telecommunications antenna, if required.
  • Relocating the salt pile and storage dome.
  • Permanently connecting the ITS services of the Jacques Cartier Bridge to the new Maintenance Centre.
  • Analyzing contaminants and determining how to treat them when demolishing the building.
  • Developing demolition methods for the original Maintenance Centre to recover as many materials as possible.

For this work, traffic hindrances will be required in 2025-2026. These hindrances will give contractors the necessary space to set up temporary installations and maintain safe distances between workers, equipment, and bridge users during the project. JCCBI is working with Mobility Montréal to coordinate this work and minimize its impact on users.
