Construction of the New Greenbelt Pathway from Tauvette Street to the Rail Trail Corridor: Phase 1

The National Capital Commission (NCC) is proposing to build a new pathway approximately 5 km long to connect the Greenbelt Pathway East to the Prescott-Russell Rail Trail Corridor. The proposed pathway will be built within the Green's Creek and Mer Bleue sectors of the NCC-Greenbelt federal lands.

Phase 1 of the pathway will connect from the south end of the Greenbelt Pathway East at the north end of Tauvette Street, running along the west side of the roadway to the intersection of Innes Road. It will be approximately 800m long and 3m wide.  For this phase, the NCC is the project proponent, land-owner, and provider of a federal approval.

The construction for phase 1 of the pathway is planned for fall 2024 and includes the following components:

  • Clearing and grubbing of existing vegetation within the pathway footprint including areas selected for the staging construction. Compensation planting will be provided as required.
  • Excavating and grading.
  • Placing a backfill base topped with a pervious stone-dust layer along the proposed alignment.
  • Installing a page wire fence along the west side of the pathway to minimize conflicts with adjacent agricultural operations.
  • Installing culverts to manage existing drainage patterns at ditches, and drainage tiles at overland flow areas.  The diameter of the culverts to be installed in drainage ditches fluctuates between 400mm and 600mm, and those to be installed at concentrated overland flow areas will 100mm in diameter.
  • Installing wayfinding, regulatory and vehicular signage and bulletin boards at some locations along the pathway segment.

The next phases of construction to link the pathway to the Prescott-Russell Rail Trail Corridor will be determined based on coordination with the City of Ottawa and will likely involve other federal authorities.
