Rehabilitation of embankment 56 of the Port of Montreal

MPA wishes to rehabilitate a section of embankment 56 of the Port of Montreal. The objective of the project is to ensure the stability of the embankment perpendicular to berth 56 located alongside the Viterra grain terminal and to respect the minimum safety distance of 10 meters needed between any structure positioned perpendicular to the edge of a vessel. Since its construction in 1958, the embankment has never been reworked and its stability is compromised due to the slopes and the materials used during its construction. The project aims to ensure the sustainability of the maritime installations and operations and the operations adjacent to the embankment. The rehabilitation of the embankment will also limit erosion, ensure stability, and minimize maintenance interventions.

The project involves the installation of a 50-meter-long wall made of tubular piles anchored with rods in bedrock followed by protective riprap to anchor the wall to the existing embankment. Once the wall is installed, material accumulated on the seabed in front of the wall will need to be removed to create the minimum clearance distance of 10 meters at the depth maintained for navigation.
