Honoré Mercier Bridge: Steel reinforcement and painting, paving, and pier repairs

Projects: HMP0007, HMP0010

The Honoré Mercier Bridge was built in 1933 and raised in 1958 and 1959 as part of the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Since 1998, Sections 1 to 4 (between the St. Lawrence Seaway and the South Shore of the bridge) have been under the responsibility of The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI), which implemented a program to repair the bridge bearings, piers, steel structure and paving to correct defects caused by many factors, such as excess road loading, de-icing salts, and moisture from the St. Lawrence River.

The project mainly includes but is not limited to the following work:

  • Complete repair of seven concrete piers over approximately 3,683 m2 as well as  repairs to their bearing cases.
  • Repair, reinforcement and replacement of steel components on five spans.
  • Levelling and paving of the road surface of Section 1 of the bridge, over approximately 600 m.
  • Painting of the bridge's entire overhead structure over the St. Lawrence Seaway.
  • Replacement of drainage systems along two piers of the bridge and specifically those on either side of the St. Lawrence Seaway.

The project will start in spring 2025 and last until November 2027.

The work will require a number of lane closures. Traffic hindrances may include complete or partial closures; closures that may take place during the day, at night and on the weekend; long-term closures; and shoulder closures. Detour routes will be set up in the case of complete closures.

The project includes environmental protection measures commonly used for this type of work given the presence of cliff swallow nests and peregrine falcons as well as the biodiversity of the Île Maline area.

This maintenance and repair program is part of JCCBI's mission to help users get where they need to go and ensure the safety and longevity of our infrastructure by applying systemic management based on a sustainable development approach.
