Rideau Canal Lighting Rehabilitation

The National Capital Commission (NCC) proposes to rehabilitate the deteriorating lighting systems within the Rideau Canal corridor. All pathway lights and streetlights would be replaced.

The proposed project would take place on lands owned by the NCC and Parks Canada, and will be subject to a federal land use, design, and real estate transaction approval under the National Capital Act. The NCC and Parks Canada will make a joint determination under the Impact Assessment Act. The NCC and the City of Ottawa would be responsible for the maintenance of the lighting systems once they were rehabilitated.

The existing light and many of the underground electrical conduits would be removed and disposed of. Some excavation would be required to install the new lights and underground electrical conduits. Some vegetation clearing would be necessary to undertake the work. Tree removals would be avoided as much as possible, but if any trees need to be removed, an appropriate compensation plan would be developed and implemented.

The Rideau Canal is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. The selection of the new lighting design would be made in consultation with heritage experts. The new lights would use energy-efficient LED lamps, consistent with the NCC's Capital Illumination Plan.

The purpose of the project would be to ensure the safety and comfort of users of the pathways and parkways.

The construction area would be accessed with machines and equipment, and all work areas would be fenced accordingly. Construction would be set to begin in spring 2023, with a completion date of fall 2024. Construction work would follow all municipal by-laws, including those related to noise.

More information about the project can be found at the NCC's Electrical System Rehabilitation.
