Camp Fortune - Alexander Lodge Replacement

 

Camp Fortune's current ski instructor lodge ("Alexander Lodge") is not safe or fit for human occupancy. To provide a new, safe space for instructors to meet, prepare for and plan snow school programs, the existing lodge will be demolished, and a new lodge will be constructed.

 

Camp Fortune is known for year-round adventure in Canada's Capital Region and offers a variety of skiing over three peaks. It has 24 runs for different skill levels, seven lifts, and twelve lit runs for skiing at night.  The ski school, which is the biggest in the region, offers both private and group lessons to make high quality snow school programs are available to all. The new lodge will better support the snow school program.

 

Camp Fortune sits on land leased from the National Capital Commission (NCC) in Gatineau Park. This proposed lodge reconstruction project must be approved under the National Capital Act. This approval process makes sure that projects on federal lands contribute to Canada's Capital being a source of pride for Canadians.

 

The new lodge will be built mostly within the same footprint, near the existing driveway and parking lot. They will dig down to the bedrock for the foundation at the back of the lodge and keep the same level as the old lodge elsewhere. An excavator and various hand tools will be used to complete the construction work. A small area adjacent to the lodge footprint within the existing parking lot will be used for storage and staging of construction materials, and construction hoarding (i.e. fencing) will be utilized to contain the site.

 

The footprint has been designed to minimize tree removal to the extent possible.

 

Work is proposed to happen in 2024 and 2025. There will be no closure or reduction of public facilities or access detours due to the project.

June 6, 2024 – The National Capital Commission intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, the National Capital Commission is inviting public comments until July 6, 2024 respecting that determination.
