Rideau Ferry Bridge Rehabilitation, County of Lanark

The project involves rehabilitation of an existing bridge that crosses the Rideau Canal at the interface between Big Rideau Lake and Lower Rideau Lake. The proponent is the County of Lanark. The following is a synopsis of the proposed work:

In fall of 2021 work will be focused on the substructure, and includes re-facing the abutments (which are terrestrial) with new concrete, and replacing the bearings at the abutment locations only. In 2022 work will involve the following elements:

  • Remove and replace cantilevered curb and sidewalk on deck edges
  • Install new pipe railings
  • Scarify Concrete Deck
  • Perform Localized Concrete Deck Repairs
  • Replace Deck Drains
  • Install additional reinforcing in deck overtop piers
  • 60mm Concrete Overlay
  • Replace Expansion Joints at bridge ends
  • Reconstruct top of Ballast Wall and construct new approach slabs

The project scope will take place adjacent or over the water but will not involve in water work. Any possible impacts to navigation (e.g. work above the navigation channel) will be assessed within the Basic Impact Assessment framework.

Parks Canada's jurisdiction extends to the Upper Controlled Water Elevation in this location and does not include any terrestrial lands, and a permit is therefore required for the project under the Historic Canal Regulations. An approval from Transport Canada is required under the Canadian Navigable Waters Act.
