Barn Relocation and Rehabilitation - 101 Herzberg Road, Ottawa, ON

The National Capital Commission (NCC) is looking to relocate and restore a heritage log barn at 101 Herzberg Rd, Ottawa, Ontario to protect the asset and support continued improvements to agri-tourism in the Greenbelt. Future generations of Greenbelt users and farmers will benefit from a relocated and restored barn building that is currently functioning as a processing facility/farm store for a thriving and well-loved apple orchard.

The proposed project would take place on leased National Capital Commission (NCC) lands and is subject to a federal land use, design, and real estate transaction approval under the National Capital Act.

The project consists of dismantling, relocating and rehabilitating the former log barn by installing the logs that made up the previous building and reinstalling them on a newly poured concrete foundation. Each log will be properly placed, and severely deteriorated logs will be replaced as needed with replacement logs supplied by the NCC from previous barn demolition projects, stored at the NCC's Woodroffe warehouses. A new cooler storage area will be framed, respecting the former building's cooler dimensions and materials. A new buried electrical feed will connect an existing house to the new barn.

The new barn location is a flat grassed area with better drainage than the previous location. Adjacent lands consist of apple trees and agricultural lands. The former barn location is 20 meters away from Watts creek, adjacent to a forested area.

The construction area will be accessed with light duty machines and equipment except at the former barn location where work will be done manually to avoid impacting tree roots and heritage resources. All work areas will be fenced accordingly. The construction is set to begin in July 2023 with a completion date of late September 2023. Construction work will abide by all municipal by-laws, including noise.
