Annapolis Royal Living Shoreline

The Annapolis Royal Living Shoreline Project is a coastal restoration initiative that will restore a salt marsh degraded by long-term development along the Annapolis Royal waterfront, using a living shoreline approach to strengthen shoreline resilience and intertidal ecosystems. The restored salt marsh will reduce erosion and wave energy, helping stabilize the shoreline and support future climate adaptation. It will also enhance habitat for invertebrates, fish, and birds. The existing marsh will remain intact, with the marsh footprint extended seaward. Project works include rearranging existing armour stone, supplemented with imported stone as required, to create a series of inner and outer protective rock sills along the waterfront spanning from approximately 83 meters south of Annapolis Royal Wharf to Queen's Wharf, without impacting the wharf itself. Although the broader project occurs along municipal waterfront lands, this basic impact assessment considers the works proposed on Parks Canada land. These works are limited to the placement of one inner and one outer rock sill, along with a small overlapping section of a third and fourth sill, as well as associated marsh substrate between the inner sill and existing marsh. No construction access through Parks Canada upland property is proposed. Construction is planned for fall 2026, with planting and post-construction monitoring continuing into 2027.

Latest update

May 28, 2026 – Parks Canada and Transport Canada intend to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Parks Canada and Transport Canada are inviting public comments until June 27, 2026 respecting that determination.
