John Lusby Marsh National Wildlife Area, Nova Scotia - Proposed restoration of freshwater wetland segment Amherst Point 1-1

Ducks Unlimited Canada is proposing to undertake a restoration of constructed wetland infrastructure located at the John Lusby Marsh National Wildlife Area.

The John Lusby Marsh National Wildlife Area is administered under the Wildlife Area Regulations of the Canada Wildlife Act. The 552 hectare National Wildlife Area contains 20.3 hectares of controlled water level freshwater wetlands (within two segments), which were built by Ducks Unlimited Canada beginning in 1973. The majority of the infrastructure comprising these constructed wetlands has exceeded its life expectancy. As a result, the earthen dykes and concrete water control structures have deteriorated such that water levels cannot be maintained at an optimal level within these wetlands. Additionally, these constructed wetlands were created within naturally occurring saltmarsh ecosystems. Upon project completion, one of two freshwater wetland segments will be restored to saltmarsh habitat, providing optimal natural habitat for waterfowl and other migratory bird species which utilize saltmarsh habitats throughout their life cycle.

The scope of this project includes mechanical breach of three sections of failed / eroding dyke within segment Amherst Point 1-1. The proposed work will be completed during fall /  winter  and during a period when disturbance to migratory birds and other wildlife will be minimal. All necessary measures to address potential siltation will be employed, including use of silt fences. All exposed surfaces will be covered with hay mulch at the completion of construction. The project will result in approximately 7 hectares of saltmarsh habitat restored.
