Cavendish Campground New Loop Construction

Climate change and its impacts on coastal shorelines (accelerated erosion, damaging wind events) have encouraged park managers to plan for coastal retreat for visitor offers such as camping. As such, this proposed project will relocate a new campground loop for Cavendish Campground inland to be more protected from climate change impacts. It was also chosen due to its room for expansion in future years as erosion continues to erode the shoreline away at Cavendish Campground.
The new loop will contain 20 unserviced sites with a central shower / washroom building. The 20 sites will all have the same 6x5m footprint with a 4m gravel driveway. These footprints will require 300mm of gravel (200mm of class A gravel and 100mm of crusher dust). This loop will be completely stand alone from the main campground with regards to service lines (water, sewer, electrical). Waste water will be piped directly to the lagoon system in the adjacent field. Potable water will be supplied by a well in close proximity to the washroom building with several water supply taps available for visitors. Electrical lines will provide power using overhead lines coming in from the roadway then migrating underground to the washroom. The access road into the site will be built up from the existing abandoned farm field using local island shale stone and class A gravel. All tent pads will be constructed using the same technique and will be topped with crusher dust. Standard construction methods will be used to build the new loop using equipment such as bulldozers, loaders, excavators, compacting rollers, concrete trucks, hydraulic lifts and drilling equipment. Civil design plans will be completed for construction to begin in spring 2021 with construction of the washroom to immediately follow. The washroom building will measure 10x18m built on 5' concrete foundation. These will be built in areas where there was previously a primitive campground back in the 1950's. At that time, vehicles were permitted to park in a mowed grass field that was previously agricultural land. Farming would have occurred here for several 100 years.
