The Canadian Coast Guard is undertaking a project to construct a new Radar Communications Site at the existing Canso Canal facility. The site is located on the North end of the Canso Causeway, near Port Hastings, Nova Scotia. The purpose of developing this new radar site includes but is not limited to:

  • Enhancing marine situational awareness for the Coast Guard and other federal partners such as National Defence and Port Authorities;
  • Addressing immediate gaps in radar coverage on Canada's East coast in support of marine safety activities;

  • Providing enhanced marine situational awareness for vessels approaching and exiting the Canso Canal.
  • Providing enhanced marine situational awareness for tanker traffic approaching and exiting the marine terminals at Point Tupper.

In general, project works are well underway on this site. Radar Installation is Scheduled for December 2021 with Permanent Radar operation scheduled for February 2022.

The scope of the project is to build an approximately 24m radar tower and a 4.3m x 4.3m generator building at the existing CCG facility. Associated equipment will be housed in the existing Canso Canal Administration building. The proposed implementation of the site development is as follows:

  • Summer 2019 – Preliminary Site Investigations:
    • Site survey
    • Site layout drawing
  • Summer & Fall 2020 – Construction Activities
    • Tower & Generator building construction
  • Fall 2021 – Construction Activities
    • Radar installation

Environmental Assessments were completed in the project areas in 2018 prior to the implementation of the Impact Assessment Act in August of 2019. The purpose of this posting is to comply with CEAA 2012 and Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada (formerly Industry Canada) Publication CPC-2-0-03.
