Wharf Reconstruction at Upper Whitehead Small Craft Harbour, Guysborough County, NS

The proposed harbour improvements project at Upper Whitehead SCH will include the construction of a launching ramp and containment cell/service area. The launching ramp will extend northeast into the harbour basin while the containment cell will be constructed directly south of the existing wharf.

The new launching ramp will be approximately 34 m long by 6 m wide consisting of a combination of cast in place and pre cast concrete slabs covering approximately 155 m2.  The harbour bottom will be excavated to elevation of -2.50 m to place a 400 mm thick core stone rock mattress to support the final 2 seaward pre-cast slabs. Core stone and a 300 mm thick layer of 50 mm clear stone will provide support on both sides of the 200 mm concrete slabs from elevation -1.30 m to elevation.+3.10 m. At the toe of the launching ramp, 200 mm rip rap will be positioned next to 300-400 mm rip rap slope protection at a 1.5:1 slope. On the east and west sides of the launching ramp, 2 layers of 200 kg to 500 kg rip rap, 1.1 m thick, will be laid on filter fabric at a 1.5:1 slope encompassing approximately 435 m2

The containment cell will be used to manage excavated material originating from the construction of the launching ramp. The containment cell will be constructed on the south side of the harbour and once filled, will provide an additional service area for harbour users.  A rock berm will be constructed connecting the existing wharf and parking lot scour protection to create a basin within which dredge material will be placed.  The berm used to create the containment cell will consist of a layer of core stone, over topped with filter stone, followed by a layer of armour stone.  The berm will have a seaward and leeward slope of 1.5:1.  The overall footprint of the containment cell will be approximately 180 m2. The containment cell construction will consist of the use of heavy equipment such as excavators and haul trucks working from the shore as it is being constructed.
