Louisbourg Lighthouse Trail Upgrade Proposal (2022)

The Coastal Connections Trail Association (The Association) maintains the Louisbourg Lighthouse Trail under a License of Operation Agreement issued by Parks Canada (2006).
Subject to funding approval from ACOA, the Association is proposing to construct a new bypass trail at Gun Landing Cove to address ongoing concerns related to trail use and maintenance.
In the subject area, the Lighthouse Trail crosses a coastal barrier beach with a walking surface consisting of beach cobble and stone. In recent years, the normally flat walking surface, maintained by Association members, is continually being compromised by increased storm frequency and intensity. This has led to ongoing safety (e.g., uneven walking surface) and maintenance (e.g., high cost, low effectiveness) issues.
To address the situation, the Association is proposing to develop a bypass trail circumnavigating inland around Gun Landing Cove. The new trail length is approximately 400m long by 1.5m wide on average. In addition to tree clearing and ground preparations, boardwalk and culvert installations are also planned.
Subject to funding approval, work will begin in summer 2022 and continue for about six months or until full completion.
