Wharf Reconstruction at MacLeod Point's (Ingonish) Small Craft Harbour, Victoria County, NS

The proposed harbour improvements at MacLeod Point (Ingonish) SCH, Victoria County, NS will include removal and replacement of the existing wharf and shoreline protection. The proposed project will result in an increase to the existing footprint of approximately 250 m2 within the footprint of the reinstated shoreline protection.

The existing timber piled, ell shaped wharf, including concrete deck (stem) and timber deck (ell) will be removed to expose the existing timber cribwork to allow construction of the new Berlin wall, anchor system, and rock backfill.

The existing core and armour stone on the south side as well as within the existing cribs underneath the ell wharf will remain. A berlin wall spanning approximately 37 m in length will be installed along the northern side of the ell wharf. H-piles will be driven through the harbour bottom into bedrock to support the installation of a precast wall panel. At approximately EL 2.0 to EL. 2.75, rockfill (type 1 and 2 rock) will be placed on the existing crib structure to support a concrete deck at approximate EL. 3.25 m.

On the southern side of the wharf stem, armour and filter stone will be salvaged and stockpiled off site to permit widening of the breakwater along the stem. H-piles will be driven through the harbour bottom into bedrock along the wharf, spanning approximately 69 m in length. The H-piles will house the precast wall panel that will span from an EL.-2.65 to EL 2.75m. Rockfill (type 1 and 2 rock) will be placed on the existing crib structure to support a concrete deck at approximate EL. 3.25 m. The salvaged stone will be reinstalled along the southern side of the stem wharf and new filter and armour stone will be supplemented as required. The wharf  reconstruction will consist of the use of heavy equipment such as excavators and haul trucks working from the shore as it is being constructed.
