Breakwater Repair and Replacement of Slipway at Pleasant Bay, Small Craft Harbour, Inverness, N.S.

The Small Craft Harbours Branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada proposes to undertake a repair of the west breakwater and removal and replacement of a slipway at Pleasant Bay Harbour. The west breakwater has sustained damage from recent storm events and the slipway is in disrepair. The west breakwater repair and the replacement of the slipway will consist of the use of heavy equipment such as excavators and haul trucks working from the adjacent service area and existing breakwater as construction proceeds.

The west breakwater repair will use existing rock material which will be relocated to achieve the design slopes and grades.  Additional rock material will be incorporated as needed to place 2 layers of filterstone at a 1.5:1 slope to rebuild the structure to the original dimensions.  Any excess breakwater material will be re-used on site. A filter fabric layer will be placed between the filterstone and the existing material at an elevation of +1.0m. The crest of the breakwater will be constructed to an elevation of +4.0m with the toe of the breakwater having an elevation ranging from +1.0m to -3.0m. Filterstone size used in the construction of the breakwater will range between 200kg to 400kg. Three 4 tonne marker stones will also be placed on the east tip of the breakwater.

The new slipway construction will start with the removal of the old slipway. The bedding material of the existing slipway will also be removed but will be reused where possible as to keep the same total thickness of the slipway. The new slipway will consist of installing 13 precast concrete panels to maintain the existing footprint.
