Le Buttereau Parking Lot Redesign, Cape Breton Highlands National Park

The current access road for Le Buttereau trailhead parking lot involves crossing Rigwash Brook, with three side-by-side culverts located beneath the roadway. This project proposes to relocate the parking area closer to the Cabot Trail, replacing the current stream crossing with a pedestrian bridge located at a relatively narrow area slightly upstream. By removing the existing culverts and returning the streambed in this area to a natural state, the project aims to improve aquatic connectivity. This project is anticipated to take place in 2021 and will be assessed with a Basic Impact Assessment.

Latest update

6 January 2021 – The public comment period on the project is closed. Parks Canada is considering comments received to help inform its determination on whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
