Proposed Dredge Material Management Site, Toney River, Pictou County, NS

The Small Craft Harbours Branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada proposes to undertake the development of a dredge material management site intended to be used to receive, store, and manage sediment material resulting from maintenance dredging activities conducted at Toney River Small Craft Harbour. Site works will involve the construction of an access road that will facilitate the transportation of dredge material from the harbour to the selected location within the proposed property that will be designed to store the material. Soil at the disposal site will be reworked to create berms that will contain the dredge material during dewatering. Once the material is dry, it can be reworked to blend into the existing landscape. A site management plan will be developed to identify appropriate mitigation measures that will address potential impacts to the surrounding environment and provide details on the proper handling and storage of dredge material onsite to avoid adverse off-site impacts. At a minimum, groundwater will be monitored through the installation of monitoring wells at representative locations on the property.
