Wallace Bay National Wildlife Area, Nova Scotia - Routine Maintenance Upgrades of constructed wetland infrastructure (Segments 1 and 2-3)

Ducks Unlimited Canada is proposing to undertake routine maintenance repairs and upgrades to existing constructed wetland infrastructure located at the Wallace Bay National Wildlife Area (segments 1 and 2-3).

The Wallace Bay National Wildlife Area is administered under the Wildlife Area Regulations of the Canada Wildlife Act. The 585 hectare National Wildlife Area contains 186 hectares of controlled water level freshwater wetlands, which were built by Ducks Unlimited Canada beginning in 1973. The majority of the infrastructure comprising these constructed wetlands has exceeded its life expectancy. As a result, the earthen dykes and concrete water control structures have deteriorated such that water levels cannot be maintained at an optimal level within these wetlands. Once completed, the existing dykes will be repaired to the original design grade and will provide optimal habitat for waterfowl and wetland obligate migratory bird species.

The scope of this project includes removal of incompatible vegetation along the extent of the existing lengths of dyke within segments 1 and 2-3. The dykes will be levelled and re-topped with glacial till from a local source. The proposed work will be completed during the winter when frozen ground conditions exist, and disturbance to migratory birds and other wildlife will be minimal. All necessary measures to address potential siltation will be employed, including use of silt fences. All exposed surfaces will be covered with hay mulch at the completion of construction, and will be seeded with native grass species in the spring. The approximate length of dyke to be repaired is 2,225 metres.
