Managed Retreat of Stanhope Cape Parking Lot and Beach Access, Prince Edward Island National Park

Stanhope Cape beach parking lot is located within sensitive dune ecosystem. The area is vulnerable to future climate events and the parking lot prevents natural processes and adaptation opportunities to take place. Furthermore, the parking lot layout is complicated and restricts good visitor flow. This project aims at relocating the parking lot south-southeast of its current location, on the north side of the Gulfshore parkway. The former parking lot will be reinstated, and coastal processes restored. The newly expanded parking lot will have an overall footprint of no more than 80 by 50 meters, with a maximum of 180 parking spaces available. The design includes vegetated islands to better integrate the parking area to the surrounding environment and limit solar radiation on vehicles. The existing vegetation on the proposed parking lot will be removed. The area will be excavated to a maximum depth of 1.2 meters. The organics will be removed with structural fill placed to design grades and capped with granular material. A new wooden dune crossing on helical piles will be built to access the beach. Archeological and cultural assessment are currently under way. The project will be completed outside of the operational season of the National Park.
