Erosion Protection Project - Potlotek First Nation
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
The condition of the shoreline of Miniku Island has deteriorated, a living shoreline approach was determined to best provide long-term sustainable erosion protection to the eastern side of the southern portion of Miniku Island. Two (2) breakwaters are proposed to be constructed within twenty meters (20m) of the eastern shoreline of Miniku Island along the location where burial grounds are becoming exposed by erosion. Furthermore, construction includes the placement of two (2) armour stone breakwaters. A layer of clean structural material (core/filter stone) will be placed on a rock mattress over a geotextile layer on the Bras d'Or Lake bed. Armour stone will be placed over the core stone. Wide rock toe will be constructed in front of each breakwater on the lake side and will support oyster gabion baskets installed on the terrace. Active oyster restoration, anchored to the rock toe below the apex of the breakwater using metal stakes, will further enhance the habitat opportunities created by the breakwaters. The system will provide effective protection against waves for the next thirty (30) years, at which point, a single layer of armour stone can be added to adjust the height of the sill to match the sea level at that time. Clean sand fill will be deposited over the existing grade on the shoreward side of the breakwaters to the top of the existing shoreline grade. A layer of topsoil will be deposited over the sand fill from the top of the existing shoreline grade. Following the deposition of the sand fill a coconut cylinder will be installed midway between the rear of the breakwater and the shoreline and will be held in place with wooden stakes.
