Future Ferries and Modifications to the Existing Channel at Wood Islands, PE

Transport Canada is proposing to dredge approximately 100,000 cubic meters of the existing navigation channel and inner harbour at the Wood Islands Ferry Terminal, PE.  A containment cell and Disposal at Sea are being considered for the placement of dredged material.

The proposed new containment cell will be constructed along the northwestern edge of the Wood Islands Ferry Terminal property.  Current design is a rock berm erected along the entire north and western perimeter of the cell as well as a portion of the south and eastern side that is not butting against existing infrastructure. The construction of this containment cell will involve creating the berm using a layer of core stone, topped with filter stone, and further fortified with a layer of armour stone and will employ heavy equipment, including excavators and haul trucks, operating from both the shore and the berm.  Its overall footprint is estimated at 26,500 square meters with a capacity to contain about 67,000 cubic meters of dredged material.

Transport Canada may also require a Disposal at Sea permit if the former Disposal at Sea site approximately 6 km from the Wood Islands Ferry Terminal is used.
