North Rustico Wharf Replacement, Floating Dock Replacement and Shoreline Protection Repairs

The southernmost portion of the wharf (Structure #407) at North Rustico Small Craft Harbour has fallen into a state of disrepair and is in need of replacement. The wharf is an open faced structure with a timber pile frame and gravel deck. The project includes the complete removal of Structure #407 and construction of a new timber fender face wharf with a piled frame with concrete caps and deck. The current structure will be removed by an excavator working from the existing wharf or lands behind the wharf. The existing timber piles will be pulled out or cut off at grade and disposed of at a provincially approved facility. There is no excavation associated with the project. The piles for the replacement structure will be driven into place and capped. Upon completion of pile driving and capping, the concrete forms will be constructed in place and the new concrete deck poured. There will be no heavy machinery working below the high water mark during installation of all wharf components. The footprint of the new portion of wharf will not be increased.

The project also includes the replacement of structure #801 – a series of floating docks. The docks will be replaced by new floating docks of the same dimensions in the same area, therefore there will be no change in footprint. The adjacent shoreline armour stone protection (structure #602) also require maintenance. It will be "topped up" with new armour stone without increasing the footprint of the structure, other than when replacing stone that has been moved out of position by ice or wave action.
