Oskâyak Miyoayâwin Youth Learning Centre

Sturgeon Lake First Nation is planning to construct a new Youth Learning Centre. The proposed facility will house expanded programming that will address community based mental health and well-being concerns. The Youth Learning Centre will be centrally located in the community on the southern shores of Sturgeon Lake within the programming space of the current Amisk Youth Camp, approximately 3.3 km away from the Sturgeon Lake Central School in an area proximate to water, power, and road infrastructure. The approximate footprint of the building will be 374 m2. The project will also include a gazebo for outdoor programming, dock to support aquatic programming and a fire pit area.

 

Potable water will be supplied by an existing underground utility line that will be extended to serve the new facility. An onsite holding tank will be required to support liquid waste collection and disposal. Although power services are currently available on site, minor improvements may be required to support the load created by the new facility (i.e. updated transformers). A telecommunication line will need to be extended from the main service feed that runs adjacent to Sturgeon Lake Road. The community does not currently have natural gas service; therefore, a propane tank will be installed and situated adjacent to the new facility.

 

Site preparation will include clearing and grubbing of vegetation and stripping and stockpiling of topsoil to reuse in final grading and landscape design. Excavation will follow to accommodate the foundation and construction of the facility. Infrastructure will be brought in to the site through either shallow open trenching or directional drilling services to the site. Framing and finishing will follow with landscaping following the installation of exterior finishings. Landscaping will include grading and sloping the property for positive drainage away from the building, but will be diverted to pass through natural vegetation to reduce silting and infiltration into Sturgeon Lake.
