The Proposed Project

Edmonton International Airport (EIA) is required to develop Runway End Safety Areas (RESA's) to comply with Transport Canada's requirements under Aerodromes Standards and Recommended Practices (TP 312) 5th Edition.

The objective of a RESA is to have an area free of objects other than frangible visual aids required to be there by function, so as to reduce the severity of damage to an aircraft overrunning or undershooting the runway, and to facilitate the movement of rescue and fire fighting vehicles.

RESA's will be constructed on each end of Runway 12-30 and Runway 02-20 (four areas). Each RESA is designed to be 152.4 meters by 150-300 meters, resulting in a maximum overall disturbance of approximately 183,000 square meters. The project is confined within the fenced airside restricted area. Soil is planned to be removed from the project area and built up with a layer of granular material.
