Decoy Beaver Dam Pilot Project for Beaver Coexistence Management

Elk Island National Park is proposing to construct a decoy beaver dam as part of a pilot project to reduce human-wildlife conflict along road infrastructure in the park. Habitat and landscape modifications by beavers have resulted in flooding up to and over the roads in the park, interrupting vehicle access, creating on-going maintenance challenges, and undermining road stability. Beavers play a critical role in regulating and influencing key ecological processes in the park, and as such Elk Island is investigating alternative methods for managing conflict sites that work with beaver behaviour and ecology. The intent of the decoy beaver dam is to reduce the amount of beaver activity at culvert inlets thereby reducing the maintenance required to keep culverts open and maintain road access. Because work will involve construction in a riparian area, this project will be assessed with a Basic Impact Assessment.

Latest update

August 23, 2024 – Parks Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Parks Canada is inviting public comments until September 22, 2024 respecting that determination.
