Airport Perimeter Road South Extension at Edmonton International Airport – Public Comments Invited

May 27, 2022 – The Edmonton Regional Airports Authority must decide whether the proposed Airport Perimeter Road South Extension, located at the Edmonton International Airport is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

To help inform this decision, Edmonton Regional Airports Authority is inviting comments from the public on the project and its potential effects on the environment. The Proposed Project

The proposed Airport Perimeter Road South extension is part of the 65 Avenue Interchange Project, which is a joint effort between Alberta Transportation, the City of Leduc, and Edmonton Regional Airports Authority (ERAA). The 65 Avenue Interchange Project consists of building a new bridge spanning the QEII Highway, providing additional road access to Edmonton International Airport (EIA) and the City of Leduc at 65 Avenue.

Work on federal land at EIA involves an extension of Airport Perimeter Road South to connect with other project components. The overall project is expected to reduce traffic congestion on QEII Highway interchanges at Highway 39 and at Airport Road and improve road access to the airport property, and businesses and industries near EIA.

The focus by ERAA under the Impact Assessment Act is the southern extension of the existing Airport Perimeter Road South, towards the existing STARS and Alberta Health Services air ambulance facility where a roundabout will be constructed. This extension will provide access to the existing 35 Avenue to the west, the new bridge spanning the QEII Highway to the east, as well as a continuation of Airport Perimeter Road south to 65 Avenue. South of the roundabout, the Airport Perimeter Road South will continue being extended southeast around the end of the airport runway, eventually heading west to the future 65 Avenue and Discovery Way intersection.

The extension of Airport Perimeter Road South through federal land includes 3.7 km of a new divided roadway, addition of a multiway trail, a new roundabout, and new streetlights. The project area is surrounded by previously disturbed lands including the international airport (EIA), transportation (QEII and secondary roads), agriculture, and commercial uses. The extension components will disturb approximately 33 ha of land which is currently used as agricultural land (~20 ha), native grassland (~9 ha), and natural drainage areas (~4 ha). Stormwater generated from the new roadways and interchange will be managed via surface drainage through roadside ditches and culverts ultimately releasing to Whitemud Creek.
